The “King of Swing” Benny Goodman commissioned American composer Aaron Copland to write the Clarinet Concerto. This performance will feature the Charleston Symphony’s Charles Messersmith. Charles was appointed as Second Clarinet with the CSO in 1998 in a national audition and became Principal Clarinet in 2005.
Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat Major for Violin and Viola will allow two CSO musicians to really shine. Jan-Marie Christy Joyce has been an indispensable member of the CSO as Principal Viola for more than 15 years. Charleston Symphony Concertmaster and Principal Pops Conductor Yuriy Bekker will join Jan-Marie on this musical partnership of Mozart’s genius.
English composer Gordon Jacob’s Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra is a study in highlighting delicacy and technique. On this performance, we will celebrate the talents of Principal Flute Jessica Hull-Dambaugh, who has been a member of the CSO since 2004.
Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, best known as the “Haffner” Symphony, has quite a storied history including its origins as a wedding serenade. Leaning heavily on strings and woodwinds, and with a bold finale, the “Haffner” Symphony is a passionate and fiery work that will showcase the incredible abilities that span across our symphony musicians.
