The Opportunity: The Artistic Operations Manager is a key operational role responsible for ensuring the successful logistical execution of all artistic activities at the Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO). This position manages the day-to-day nuts and bolts of concert production and rehearsal coordination, overseeing the Personnel Manager, Librarian, and Production Manager. Reporting to the General Manager, the Artistic Operations Manager plays a central role in maintaining operational excellence across artistic functions.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Concert Production & Rehearsal Operations
- Coordinate all production elements for Masterworks, Pops, chamber music, education programs, and special events.
- Develop and manage production schedules, rehearsal logistics, and stage setups.
- Secure venues, permits, equipment rentals, and backline needs.
- Oversee guest artist logistics in partnership with appropriate staff.
- Team Oversight & Staff Coordination
- Directly supervise the Personnel Manager, Librarian, and Production Manager.
- Ensure alignment across departments in scheduling, setup, and production needs.
- Facilitate communication between artistic personnel and administrative staff.
- Budget & Administrative Management
- Develop and track budgets for artistic operations and production.
- Implement cost control and logistical efficiencies without compromising artistic quality.
- Negotiate Artists Contracts and ensure all riders provisions are arranged and met, providing our guests with “Charleston Style” hospitality.
- Manage contracts and payment schedules for artistic personnel, vendors, and venues.
- Artistic Logistics
- Manage the orchestra’s season calendar and master schedule.
- Maintain production timelines, technical riders, and logistical documentation.
- Support compliance with musicians’ union contracts and internal policies.
- General Support
- Serve as primary liaison for backstage activity during performances and rehearsals.
- Assist the General Manager with planning and reporting functions.
- Ensure smooth execution of all performances and internal collaboration with other departments.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in music, arts administration, or production management.
- 3+ years of professional experience in orchestral operations or performance logistics.
- Demonstrated success in managing production schedules and coordinating performance logistics.
- Experience supervising staff or vendors in a live event or performing arts environment.
- Knowledge of orchestral repertoire and terminology.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of professionalism and discretion when working with guest artists and musicians.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and scheduling software (e.g., ArtsVision or OPAS a plus).
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and work in physically active backstage settings.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a CSO vehicle as needed.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends for rehearsals and performances.
Salary: $60K-$75K commensurate with experience.
